Jordyn’s Dream (A TRADITIONAL FANTASY)
It was raining Cats, and Dogs that fateful Wednesday Evening. Oddly, the rains in Ventrewmead town usually poured in the month of May.
As Jordyn liked to play in the rain, she wasted no time to place herself, strategically, under the tent in her Father’s backyard, when it started to drizzle. As torrents of the rain built up some more, she counted down to ten, as was her routine, before running off, out from under the tent, into the now fully formed downpour of rainfall.
Singing, she glided gently, into the muds, which then turned her beautiful pink tulle dress, into it a pale brown colour.
The song was one her mom always sang to her, as she swung little Jordyn around in the rains, as a child. The singing, and swinging was almost always accompanied by giggles, and laughter. Now, almost a young adult, she never forgets to sing, and dance to the inaudible rhythm of the song, when she is out playing in the rain.
“…In the clouds, I catch a glimpse of your lovely smile, beckoning on me; come here my darling, my darling oh my darling…” she was almost halfway into the bridge of her infamous ‘rain-day’ song when she stopped to sniff deeply into the air, inhaling the petrichor the now ended rainfall left in the soil.
“Oh no!!” she wailed in her tiny beautiful voice. As she picked herself up from off the muddy ground, hands now akimbo, “i was only getting started” she said. Jordyn could not understand how abruptly that ended, even faster than it had begun..
Alas! The rains did not last for more than two minutes. It seemed like it only came to take a peek, and leave, when Jordyn was starting to enjoy her dance in the mud. Her dress, now a heavily pigmented brown colour, she strolled into the bushes.
“..and all I had to do was stare right back at you. My darling oh my darling..meet me here, meet me there. I’d be everywhere..oh my darling”, she impulsively continued singing from where she had stopped.
Mild rays of sunlight had started to beam onto the freshly washed grass, and the leaves on the trees had a heavenly smell; the kind that soothed Jordyn. She sat quietly at the bottom of one of the trees, staring at a jasmine flower she had plucked as she strolled into the bushes. “My goodness that sure is a beautiful flower you have there” a voice from behind her startled her. She stands up, and dusting off dry mud from her dress, she looked around and said “who is there”. She got no response. “Hello”, she called out again. “Gotchya!!!” a dashing young man retorted, as he jumped out from behind the tree.
“Aaaaahhhh!!!”Jordyn’s scream-filled reaction came almost simultaneously, as her mystery guest exclaimed. “Who are you..don’t do that” She sharply told the beautiful looking man who now stood directly in front of her.
Yes, beautiful!, because the sun hit his face perfectly, accentuating its uniquely sculpted features. Jordyn would come to learn that her mystery guest’s name is Japhet. “So you want to tell me what yours is?” Japhet asked Jordyn. “Er..er.. hmmmm Jordyn”. She stuttered. “Are you okay?” he asked, as he approached her, helping her to a sitting position. “Oh thanks..I am fine..why did you do that?”, Jordyn asked. “I just though it would be fun to scare you a little”, Japhet replied. “Well, you got me.”, she softly said, striking her distinct, pretty smile. “I was telling you how beautiful the flower was..i would like to take that back” Japhet said. “ And why is that?”, she asked. “Well, it is nowhere close to being half as beautiful as that smile you just let out” he said. “You flatter me”, Jordyn said, as she let out a shy smile this time. “Oh I do say so” he reassured. “Well, thank you” Jordyn responded.
“You are covered up in mud..did you fall down..are you hurt?’, he asked, in a concerned tone. “Well, I am not hurt.. In fact, I am dirty on purpose”, she replied. “Oooh interesting…tell me more”, he said, enthusiastically as he took a seat beside her.
“I’m sorry, what?”, she aptly retorted, as she covered her face, with her small beautiful hands “Now i’m embarrassed” she said, in an extremely low voice. “What’s that, now?”, he asked. “Huh?”, she asked back. “You were muffling your words, what did you say?” he asked again. “Er…nothing..i just don’t have a story to tell. I was playing in the rain, that’s all”. Japhet raises his eyebrows; “I see. But aren’t you a little too old to still be doing that?”, he asked sarcastically. “Don’t you judge me!!”, she exclaimed, laughing. Japhet joined in the laughter, and they looked at each other, smiling.
Still grinning, without a clue, what else to say or do, they continued to stare into each other’s eyes.
That took about another three minutes, then Jordyn closed her eyes, shook her head, and asked, “So..where did you creep out of?.. I do not think I have seen you around, before now”.
“I am from the nearby Walstead town..i was only taking a stroll” the mystery man said.
“I see.”, Jordyn replied, nodding her head.
“Well, like you, some of us also have plans for the rains, whenever it pours, especially if it has not, for a long time, just like today’s”, he said, and stopped, to stare at her for a few seconds. “Er..go on”, she said. Japhet continued “Well, I do not exactly play in the rain, and get dirty like you do, but” She hits him slightly on his left arm, “Owww!!! hold on, let me finish”, he exclaimed, as he rubbed his arm; “but..but I do use that time to collect insects, especially mites”. “Now, that is just weird”, Jordyn responded, with wide eyes.
“Not as weird as rolling in the mud and ruining that beautiful dress you have on” he said, with a friendly smirk on his face. Jordyn looked sternly at Japhet, trying to hold in another beautiful smile that was almost begging to break free from the sides of her lips. “Aha! there you go, there you go again..let it out..please Jordyn, do not hold back that beautiful awesomeness, that is your smile” Japhet said, smiling. Jordyn, at this point, reaches her threshold, and bursts into laughter. Japhet joins in as usual. This time, they laugh so hysterically, that they fall, laying side by side on the ground. Now back to staring into each other’s eyes, Japhet takes the lead in breaking the silence this time “Wow, you are so beautiful”.
“Don’t say that”, Jordyn replied, covering her face.
He gently takes her soft little palms off her face, as he said in the most gentle, soft, and low voice, “But you are..you really are”.
She quietly stared right back at him, saying nothing.
“Or do you not know that you are?” He asked, in the quest to jolt her off her silence.
Jordyn shrugs.
“Well, you are! I cant stop staring at your beautiful eyes. They steer me right into your soul. Your equally beautiful soul” Japhet said smoothly.
Jordyn is all giggles, on hearing Japhet’s poised up poetry to her.
He goes on to say “Marry me!”
“Haha! Now, i am sure you are a joker” she expressed, with a confused look.
“Oh no, Jordyn, I mean all my words to you right now” he said. “Marry me, make me a happy man. You are the damsel I dreamed, and hoped I would cross paths with someday..My joy..My Happiness.. The peace that calms the storm in my heart. My peace..my own pea..” Jordyn cuts his sugar filled lines short, saying “I have to go now..I would like to Lea..” “Shhhh” Japhet placed his fore finger on her soft lips “Don’t leave. Please don’t leave” He goes ahead to plant a soft kiss on her forehead.
“Hmmm” she let out softly.
He stares even more deeply into her eyes; “I wished for this. It has finally come to me. I won’t let you slip away from me” he told her.
“But..but” words were starting to fail Jordyn.
“No buts” he quickly cut in, gently moving the quiff of hair on her face, to the side.
He plants another kiss on her forehead.
“You had me at ‘that sure is a beautiful flower'” she said
” I loved you before I even saw your face” she went on to express herself.
Japhet’s face lit up as he listened to Jordyn pour out her heart.
“I also wished for this day” she went on ” My prince..my prince charming..my beautiful knight..the one I would call King..my Lordship..the one that keeps me smiling”
“Hmmm you know I love that smile” Japhet cut in.
Jordyn continues to smile sheepishly.
The sheepish smile that would now reflect on her face as her mum calls out to her “Jordi!! Jordi!!” This was how her mum fondly called her.
As Jordyn continued to bask in the delight that could only be so, as long as her eyes were shut, her mom broke into their rain-day song.
Taking the song from the top, she sang with such melodious harmony..” Oh rainfall..oh rainfall..how you make me so pleased..the beauty you create with each drop..oh rainfall oh rainfall” .
As she forges to hum the bridge of the song, Jordyn slightly opens one of her eyes and catches a glimpse of her mum’s long red hair, sitting pretty on both sides of her gorgeous oblong face.
She goes on to open both eyes, as she jumps off her bed.
“Mom!! Mom!!” She shouted..
“My darling what is the matter” Jordyn’s mum asked, as she pulled her closely to herself, laying her head on her laps.
Jordyn heaves a huge sigh, as she has now come to the realisation that her Prince charming, who was that, and many more other sweet things to her, had been wiped off with the memories, she would soon come to recognise as her magical fairytale moment.
“It is raining..that was a deep sleep you went into. Get along! Go play in the rain” her mom told her.
As Jordyn scrambled through her cupboard for her pink tulle dress, she could not stop thinking about her mystery guest, she would now, perhaps, never meet again.
“What a dream” she said, as disappointment sat comfortably, in her heart.
